Reducing Stress While Keeping Your Edge

Stress can undermine success. When you are working at the top of your game, making sure you manage stress can be the secret to a long and healthy business life. While there is a lot of advice out there, and plenty of stress reduction programs, pills and prescriptions, some of the best remedies for reducing stress are ideas you might hear from your mother.

If there is one single, top reason for out of control stress, it probably has to do with not getting enough sleep. Sleep is vital to physical and mental regeneration. How much sleep a person needs differs between individuals, but every person has an optimum amount, usually somewhere between five and nine hours. If you do not get this amount of sleep, you will have a harder time managing stress. So, while it may sound banal, knowing how much sleep you really need, and meeting that need, is one of the first places to look if you are looking to reduce stress in your life.

Getting some cardiovascular exercise for stress reduction is a no-brainer. Everyone knows that a good workout releases those feel good brain chemicals that reduce tension and fatigue – even if everyone does not get that exercise. When you work out more, you probably also drink more water. Even if you are having trouble working more a workout into your daily routine, simply drinking water like you are working out will help with stress reduction. A well hydrated body eliminates more toxins, including stress hormones.

Many foods bog down the body leading to stress as well. Junk food, caffeine and alcohol are the biggest foes. Simple changes in diet, like eating more fruits and vegetables, going for decaf and keeping alcohol consumption down to a minimum will help your body be less stressed out. When the body is not overloaded with nonessential food and drink, better sleep quality; a sharper mind and less stress are the results.

So, while there are all kinds of stress management techniques out there to spend your hard earned money on, consider trying some of these cost free lifestyle changes as part of your stress management plan as well. These low profile changes might not seem very glamorous, but they will help with stress reduction, giving you more energy for life in the fast lane. If you want to impress someone by making these improvements, just tell your mom.
