A lot of people don’t like their jobs because of their bosses and if they could do their job without ever seeing him, there would be no love lost. Most workers spend a lot of time preparing for their careers by attending school, getting internships and finally graduating to the big leagues and getting their experience on the job. They want to be comfortable on the job for which they have prepared so hard.
There is a simple formula for doing your job without seeing your boss. Do your work to the best of your ability and your boss will have little reason to hover over your workstation. I know a savvy lady who learned early on that her job as a substitute teacher was constantly being scrutinized.
Rightly so because students have a tendency to think that having a substitute means having a “free” day to slack off. Worst is when they decide to become disruptive. This unruliness ultimately leads to the principal or other administrator coming into the classroom and chastising the teacher. This lady knew that if the kids refused to do their work, she had to occupy students’ time in other ways – even if it meant a day of playing games in order to keep calm and order.
Calm and order in any workplace is the way to appease the boss. Once he sees that you are a motivated self-starter, he will likely be pleased with your job performance and look to you as someone who can be counted on to get the job done. Look to your boss as a mentor whom you can go to if you want to learn new aspects of your job. However, always make it a point never to waste his time. He is a busy person, too.
Give your boss credit where credit is due. If you are asked to prepare reports, make sure they make the boss shine in the most favorable light. Also always remain confidential about details that aren’t meant to be leaked outside the confines of his office.
Like it or not – your boss will need to see you periodically. The key is to success with him is to develop a positive relationship. You will probably gain more responsibility and the trust he imparts on you will aid in your job success.
