The ‘Mouse That Roars’ Inside Of Us: The Dreaming, Winning Entrepreneur

As the old book and movie ‘The Mouse That Roared’ reminds us, the little guy that dreams big can win big. In fact, all victories start with the firing up of the imagination.  Inside of us, we all have a mouse ready to roar. The trick is how to make that roaring dream become a reality.

The road to success takes different paths. Sometimes it’s a burning desire that was triggered by an unexpected motivating experience, or maybe it’s getting a kick out of receiving recognition and being heralded for something that felt great when you did it. It’s the child who made people laugh and grew up to be a brilliant comedian, or it’s the accomplished designer, doctor, race car driver or anyone else that experienced a spark, and dared to dream that someday they’d reach loftier heights by pursuing more of that magical touch that made them feel victorious.

Sometimes the spark is jumpstarted and encouraged by someone else, such as a parent, a sibling, a teacher, someone they saw on TV, or elsewhere. There is no exact formula of when and where that burning desire to succeed will strike. There are also ‘late bloomers’ galore, so no sense in giving up when the charge towards victory is just another push away – maybe the next push. Where there is the ability to dream, there’s the fuel to hope and achieve. Humans never stop dreaming or thinking of a better tomorrow. The hope and dream of a better tomorrow, even in the face of frustration or despair, is in our DNA.

The inspiration for Bill Gates and Steve Jobs was manifested by tinkering with gadgets in their garages, which is also where Steven Spielberg forged ahead with the beginning of his fantastic journey. J.K. Rowling and Justice Sonia Sotomayor fired up their imaginations that would springboard them to the top of their professions through devouring the pages of books in their early years, and promoted by the loved ones around them, who encouraged them to apply what they read and put it to supreme usage.

The list of entrepreneurs that persevered so that their entrepreneurial dreams and inner mice ‘roared’ is endless and, thankfully, we live in a world where the cream can rise to the top through hard work, determination and unbridled dreaming. The hot pursuit of the better widget, or other great successes yielding boundless rewards, lives…just ask Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and so many others who have reached the pinnacle of their specialties and inspire us, all as role models, to follow suit. Their common denominator, and what you’ll find in all successful people, is that their journey started with a simple dream.

One can only achieve what he/she believes. And that belief comes from two places: experience and dreaming. Often, it’s a little of both. It’s often not so easy. No victory worth pursuing ever is. But daring to think the good, the better and sometimes the impossible is what the foundation of our whole free enterprise system is built on. Luck, and not giving up are also important parts of the equation, but when you get down to it, you have to have the fire in your belly to want to be excellent, and to pursue the hard or unconventional thing to do. Entrepreneurialism is saying ”yes” when everything and everyone around you might be pointing to ”no.”

We all have at least one mouse (or a few mice) inside of us, just aching to roar and help the universe be a better place, even if it’s just a little better, in subtle ways. Some do it for recognition, and possibly fame and fortune…or to simply fill us and/or those around us with pride. The combinations of the motivations of entrepreneurs are endless, but we have to not suppress that mouse. We have to not let it idle quietly. It’s not only a personal loss, but one for humanity too, when we do let the potential of the roaring mouse within us just squeak.

Today just happens to be the perfect day to rev up our internal dream-factory and get that entrepreneurial mojo pumping! Let the mouse, and them engines, roar. It all starts with a dream; the same dreaming process common to every single enterprising success story ever imagined.
