Corporate – or any business meeting for that matter, can be a real drag. For the most part, if you ask any business person about meetings, they will most likely have nothing nice to say. In fact, my colleague the other day just rolled his eyes. That’s really a shame, because meetings should be an opportunity to collaborate, energize and get creative. Truth is, they could be, if managers took the time to plan them to be that way.
For example, I usually send out an email soliciting topics. People tend to show up and participate more when they are actually included. I plan a loose agenda around the feedback and distribute it beforehand. That can really get the creative thought process going. The last thing I always do is ensure that there are beverages, lunches, or at least snacks!
There is plenty of evidence to support that the work environment has an enormous impact on productivity. An inadequate working environment runs the risk of being so annoying that it is distracting – or even downright dangerous. Anyone who has seen the movies Norma Rae or Silkwood can relate to that.
While hopefully most of us never have to deal with broken labor codes or toxic chemicals – well, at least not the toxic chemicals! – it’s still a good idea to ensure work place safety and adequacy. One area that can easily get overlooked is meeting rooms. Either businesses don’t have enough or none at all.
Whether it is work or play – the place where it occurs can really make a huge difference. That’s why more lively lunch, cocktail, and dinner meetings are not only more fun – but they are more collaborative as a result. And nothing feeds productivity more than actually feeding the staff!
Given that so much of my workweek can be gobbled up by meetings – when I’m in charge of them I like to make sure the space is nicely designed. By this I mean there is enough space for everyone to sit, spread out, and not feel cramped.
I’m lucky enough to have access to meeting rooms anytime I want them. But some may not. For them, the solution is affordable outside meeting rooms. Some businesses use them on a regular basis. Like a great romantic partner, they’re well kept, affordable, nice looking and always available!
